K12LTSP – K12 Linux Terminal Server Project – creates a lab environment that is easy to adminster, stable and reliable.
With K12LTSP, everything runs on the server, which means users and
programs are configured and managed in a central location on the
server. The workstations act as terminals, displaying screens and
accepting keystrokes.
The chief benefits of K12LTSP are:
- No more musical chairs, sitting down at every workstation to
install or configure software. Instead of 30 installs, you do one on
the server and every lab workstation instantly has access to it.
Result: much less maintenance time in the lab.
- Almost any computer, even an old 486, will work as a
workstation. Since all the processing happens on the server, the
workstations only need to run the display, and listen for mouse and
keyboard input. Result: no need to upgrade workstations!
Additional advantages
Open Source means:
- no licensing costs or problems
- no viruses or spyware
- web site filtering is available at no cost
- reduced power consumption and heat
- students can login at any workstation and get their personalized environment
- students can take home many of the programs they run at school, and install them at home for free.
